Short Columns

Short columns fail by **crushing**. Formula:

P = σallow × A

For concrete (fck=25 MPa), σallow ≈ 0.4 × fck.

Eccentric Loads on Columns

Eccentric loads cause bending stress in addition to axial load:

σ = (P/A) ± (P × e × y) / I
Column Base Plate Design

Base plate distributes column load to foundation:

Aplate = P / σbearing
Elastic Buckling

Euler’s formula applies for slender columns:

Pcr = (π² × E × I) / (K × L)²

Limit State Design (IS 456):

Pu = 0.4fckAc + 0.67fyAs

ASD Design:
